Baby denied heart transplant

A 5 month old baby was fighting for his life, his parents Autumn Chenkus and Charlie Higgs were talking to the five doctors and a nurse at the hospital. Maverick, the baby needed a heart transplant. All the doctors told Maverick’s parents that they couldn’t do anything to help Maverick. They told them that Maverick had only 6 months to live, but Maverick’s mom didn’t want to accept the fact that her son only had months to live, so she thought maybe the internet might have clues on how to keep her son alive. The doctors told them that Maverick was born with a severe heart defect.  The doctors said that Maverick didn’t really qualify for a new heart because it will put him to risk for tumors and other infections. Maverick’s mom e-mailed one study’s author and they didn’t mention anything about an increased risk for tumors or anything like that so she was sure they would do the heart transplant so her baby won’t have to die.  Maverick’s mom thought that maybe they didn’t want to give her baby a heart transplant because then he might grow up with disabilities, and the doctors try to select patients most likely to get the longest life so they can give the heart to them, because now there’s thousands of people still waiting for a new heart but there’s only a very few donors. Maverick had his first surgery when he was only 4 days old at Morgan Stanley Children’s hospital, but the surgery didn’t go as well as the doctors planned or hoped. Maverick’s condition then worsened so the doctors decided to perform second surgery months later but that surgery didn’t work either. A few months later the doctors told Maverick’s parents that Maverick was eligible for a heart transplant but then about a few days later they said he wasn’t a candidate for a transplant anymore. Later, his parents kept making more research and talking to more hospitals about Maverick’s problem, they talked to doctors and they gave Maverick a heart transplant in Boston. They had said maverick being at heightened risk for tumors and infections was false information they gave them. Even though Maverick spent most of his life in the hospital it was worth it, he’s healthy and better, and his mom said she’s glad she didn’t give up, now Maverick amazes her.

Inverted Pyramid

Just as they use many different kinds of leads , journalists use many different kinds of frameworks for organizing stories . Journalists may tell some stories chronologically . Other stories may read like a good suspense novel that culminates with the revelation of some dramatic piece of information at the end . Still other stories will start in the present , then flash back to the past to fill in details important to a fuller understanding of the story . To understand what the ” inverted pyramid ” means , picture an upside-down triangle one with the narrow tip pointing downward and the broad base pointing upward . The broad base represents the most newsworthy information in the news story , and the narrow tip represents the least newsworthy information in the news story . When you write a story in inverted pyramid format , you put the most newsworthy information at the beginning of the story and the least newsworthy information at the end .Image

Common Sense By : Thomas Paine

In common sense , Thomas argues for American Independence . His argument begins with more general , theoretical reflections about government & religion , then progresses onto the specifics of the colonial situation . Society , according to Paine is everything constructive & good that people join together to accomplish . Government , on the other hand , is an institution whose sole purpose is to protect us from our own vices . Paine says that government’s sole purpose is to protect life , liberty and property , and that a government should be judged solely on the basis of the extent to which it accomplishes this goal .

John Peter Zenger Trial :o

On April , 16th , 1735 , the New York Supreme Court met in the second floor courtroom of New York City Hall . After attorneys James Alexander and William Smith , who were also Popular Party Members , had attempted to represent John Peter Zenger at his trial , the Court decided to disbar both of them . The court did this because it was known that no attorney in the Province of New York would be as bold in the defense of John Peter Zenger as Alexander & Smith . A man named John Chambers was then assigned as a council for Zenger and entered a plea of not guilty . After John Peter Zenger had languished in jail for a year , his trial began on August , 4 , 1735 inside a small court room in the New York City Hall .

Yellow Journalism

Yellow journalism was a style of newspaper reporting that emphasized sensationalism over facts . During its heyday in the late 19th century it was one of many factors that helped push the United States and Spain into war in Cuba and the Philippines , leading to the acquisition of overseas territory by the United States . The term originated in the competition over the New York City newspaper market between major newspaper publishers Joseph & William Randolph Hearst . At first Yellow journalism had nothing to do with reporting but instead derived from a popular cartoon strip about life in New York World .
